We Don’t Know How to Rest
Let’s be real. Most of us don’t know how to rest well, let alone take care of ourselves in a meaningful way. We’ve been taught to hustle. We’ve been conditioned to believe that our worth is tied to our productivity. Even in church spaces, we’ve heard messages that elevate sacrifice and service but rarely speak about rest, healing, and boundaries. Because self-care is sacred.
But this week at Refuge, we started a brand new series that flips that script: Holy Habits: The Sanctity of Self-care.
Self-care Isn’t Selfish — It’s Sacred!
Jesus never rushed. He never burned out. He prioritized self-care. Jesus made time for the holy rhythms of rest, prayer, silence, and solitude.
In Luke 5, we read; “Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness to pray.” He didn’t do this once or twice. It’s wasn’t just his response to exhaustion. it was his HABIT. A sacred habit of reconnecting with God, Himself, and his purpose.
Jesus knew what we are STILL learning; we cannot give from and empty well.
Loving Others Starts With Loving OURSELVES
Jesus says it pretty clearly in Mark 12:
“Love the Lord your God… and love your neighbor as yourself”
But how can we love others will if we don’t care for ourselves?
Self-care isn’t about bubble baths or binge-watching. It’s about tending to our heart, mind, body, and soul. It is about being rooted int God’s love – so that we can show up fully for others.
At Refuge, we believe that self-care is sacred. Not just for our well-being – -but for the sake of our community, family, and our calling.
