Most of us want clarity before we move forward. We want answers, and certainty. We want God to hand us a five-year plan with highlighted directions and guaranteed outcomes. However, faith rarely works that way. More often than not, God gives us just enough light for one more step.
That is the heart behind our current series at Refuge Church called One More. We have talked about “one more year,” “one more misfit,” and now we are focusing on One More Step. The reality is simple. Being found by God is not the end of the story. It is the beginning of learning how to move forward, even when life feels uncertain.
In The Bible, Luke 17 tells the story of ten men living in isolation because they were labeled “lepers.” They cried out to Jesus for mercy. Yet Jesus did not immediately heal them. Instead, He told them to go show themselves to the priests. As they walked, they were healed.
That detail matters.
Healing happened in motion. It happened after obedience. It happened after they took one more step.
Many of us are waiting for certainty before we move. We say things like, “I’m waiting on God.” Meanwhile, God may already be inviting us to take the next faithful step. Faith is not passive, faith is choosing to keep walking when we cannot see the full picture.
The truth is, uncertainty is hard. We live in a world full of anxiety, grief, loss, chronic pain, financial stress, and unanswered prayers. Sometimes Christian clichés can feel empty when life falls apart. Yet biblical faith was never about pretending to have all the answers. Biblical faith is trusting that the ground beneath you will hold, even when you cannot see far ahead.
Psalm 119 says God’s Word is “a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” In the ancient world, that lamp was tiny. It did not illuminate miles ahead. It gave enough light for a few steps at a time.
That is what One More Step looks like.
Not perfect certainty. Not fearlessness. Just enough trust to keep moving.
At Refuge, we believe faith is not about having everything figured out. It is about taking one more step toward healing, community, purpose, and Jesus. One more step toward hope, one more step toward belonging, and one more step together.
