As we approach Juneteenth, Refuge Church would like to invite our community to join us in celebrating this significant day with our Juneteenth Block Party on June 22nd. More than just a gathering, this even is an opportunity to honor the history and resilience of the black community. Taking the time to recognize the ongoing struggle against racism and foster unity and fellowship within our community.
Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, remembers the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas learned of the their freedom more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed. This day marks the end of slavery in the United States. It is a powerful reminder of the long and painful journey toward freedom and equality.
Recognizing Juneteenth is important because it acknowledges the ugly truth of slavery and the ongoing impacts of systemic racism. It is a day to honor the strength and contributions of the Black community. It is an opportunity to educate ourselves on the history that has shaped our society. To celebrate Juneteenth reminds us that the fight for equality is far from over.
Come for a day of celebration and reflection. Our Juneteenth Block Party is an opportunity for us to come together, learn, and celebrate. Here’s what we have planned:
Show off your basketball skills in an exciting 3-point tournament with a $100 cash prize! Sign up here to be a part of this friendly competition!
We are hoping to organize a free raffle with fantastic prizes. Donations for the raffle are greatly appreciated. All proceeds will go towards supporting our community and outreach programs. Your generosity can help make this event a great success!
At 4 PM, Flavas on Wheels food truck will be serving up some delicious meals. Come and enjoy some fantastic food while you connect with friends and neighbors.
Sheri Armstrong from Fox 4 will be our special guest speaker at our service immediately following our celebration!
In honoring Juneteenth, we acknowledge the importance of celebrating the Black community’s history. Racism still exists, and it is our responsibility to stand against it. Refuge is a safe place for all people. Come and celebrate with us: fostering an environment of inclusion, understanding, and respect. By coming together to celebrate Juneteenth, we take a step toward unity and show our commitment to supporting one another in the ongoing fight for equality. We look forward to seeing you on June 22nd!
