We are moving right along in our summer of series! This week Pastor Nicole kicked off our new series: “Y’all Means All!“ Over the next few weeks we’re going to be looking at the apostles’ ACTS of inclusivity. So, to get us rolling Pastor Nicole goes on a deep dive and exploring the differences between tolerance and inclusion. It’s an easy thing to say we welcome all y’all, but what does it really mean? Are we truly creating spaces where all people feel valued, or just tolerated?
The big question this week is: am I inclusive, or am I merely tolerant? While they seem similar in meaning, the subtle differences are profound. Tolerance is a starting point. It’s the willingness to coexist with others who may not share our views or ideas. However, tolerance alone can be passive and indifferent. It can lead to a community where differences are endured, not celebrated. On the other hand, inclusion is proactive. It requires effort, understanding and a commitment to making all people feel like they belong.
Acts 10 tells a story of 2 very different men, having similar experiences with The Lord. One man responds with inclusivity, the other with tolerance. Peter, a devout Jew initially struggles with the idea of associating with Gentiles. He tolerates their existence but resists full acceptance. But we get to see Peter’s journey from tolerance to inclusivity. Engaging with Gentiles and seeing their humanity, his heart is transformed! He learns that God’s love knows no boundaries. Embracing the idea that God plays no favorites, he moves from a place of tolerance to a full on inclusion.
We are asking ourselves: are we just tolerating those who are different, or are we embracing them with open arms? Tru inclusivity is more than just allowing difference to exist. Rather, it is about active ensuring that all y’all feels welcomed, valued, and a part of the community!
Join us in person or on Facebook live each week as we challenge ourselves to move beyond tolerance and strive for inclusion. Let’s build a community where all y’all – no matter your background, beliefs, or identity — can find a safe place!
Refuge is a safe place for y’all to explore and restore y’alls faith in Jesus and His church!
