Conflict is inevitable. No matter where we are, we all encounter disagreements. But how do we, as a community of believers, hand conflict in a way that reflects Jesus. This is the question Pastor David tackles as he takes us through Acts 15.
What was the big conflict in Acts 15? Should Gentile believers be required to follow the Jewish laws – including circumcision? The stakes were high, threatening to split the church into two groups. This wasn’t a simple disagreement over minor details – it was about defining what it meant to be a Christian.
In Acts 15, we see how the apostles and elders approached this divisive issue. The didn’t back down from conflict. Instead, the met together, listened to one another, and sought Godly wisdom. Peter, tired of heated arguments, reminded everyone that God gave the Holy Spirit to the Gentiles just like he did to the Jews. His message clear: salvation is through grace alone – in Christ alone – NO ADDED REQUIREMENTS. This was pivotal, because it brought the focus back to Jesus!
Churches continue to face conflicts. Whether it’s over social issues, political beliefs, or interpretations of scripture. The thing we need to take from Acts 15 is that in every conflict, we must return to the life and love of Jesus. By focusing on Jesus as our example, we can navigate disagreements with grace. So that we prioritize unity over division.
