Joy to the world

Hillsong Worship

Summer is right around the corner, an we’re kicking of a Summer of Series at Refuge. We will be journeying through the book of Acts from start to finish! One series at a time exploring it’s themes and telling its stories. Most importantly we’ll be learning from the first Church of Misfits lessons that resonate with our Church of Misfits here at Refuge. Our first Sumer Series is titled “Acts B.C. Before the Church.” Over the next few weeks we’ll be looking at how the Holy Spirit was working in and through the apostles before the church even began.

Previously On…

The book of Acts is a continuation of the Gospel of Luke — written by Luke. Think of it as a “part 2” or a sequel that picks up telling the story after Jesus’ ascension. In Acts we will uncover the Holy Spirits role in empowering the apostles to act to spread the Gospel and grow the early church. The early church was a start-up-experimental-unicorn kind of church. It faced growth, challenges, and triumphs that we’ll look at over the course of the summer.
Pastor Nicole’s sermon, title “Previously On..” zooms in on Acts 1:1-11 giving us a recap of what lead us to Acts. This sets the stage by revisiting the things Jesus began to do and teach, emphasizing that his work was far from done.

The Kingdom of God

A significant part of our journey will involve understanding the Kingdom of God. Jesus taught that it wasn’t just a future hope, but a present reality. A kingdom that included and welcomed all people. A kingdom that operated from a place of love, justice, mercy, forgiveness, and redemption. And being a people who are lead by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is crucial in preparing, equipping, and focusing us on our mission. Pastor Nicole points out to us that even Jesus was led by the Holy Sprit. Bring to mind the truth that if Jesus relied on the Holy Spirit, then so should we.

Acts B.C. reminds us that before the church could grow, the apostles needed the Holy Spirit. Refuge has some things to navigate in the coming months. Hopefully The Summer of Series will inspire us to embrace our unique identity and mission. We will learn to hear how the Holy Spirit speaks to us. Giving us the courage to act with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, in a world that so desperately needs to experience the Kingdom of God on earth.
