In the New Testament, and early Church History writings, we don’t see Christians implementing a mandatory tithe, just like we don’t see them sacrificing goats to cover sins. What we do see in scripture is Christians being very generous, not out of a command or because their money has been arm wrestled away from them, but cheerfully according to their ability.
In fact, one of the greatest testimonies to outsiders of the early Church, has to do with how generous they were to the poor and needy.
A 1 Corinthians 2:7 says: You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure.
At Refuge.Church we do not take up a weekly offering. We do not want members or visitors of Refuge to ever feel pressured to give, nor feel like giving satisfies some Jesus tax.
We do however want to be a generous church. We have some ambitious goals for giving and helping those in our community. As a church with no full time staff, and no debt, our ambition is to give 50% of all general tithing back to the community to helping the poor and marginalized and we can only do this through the generosity of those who call Refuge their church family.
