Welcome to week two of our FUN-conventional series centered around The Barbie Movie. Yes, yes, I know! You’ve heard all the things about Barbie! But stick with us, because this journey is about so much more than what meets the eye! We started to peel back the layers last week, finding the bigger theme of The Barbie Movie. When we put away our preconceived ideas about it, we can start to see the profound theme that resonates through this movie. We will face challenges, transformations, existential crises, and through it all we are never done becoming. This week we look at what it means to be and advocate, and the example that Jesus gave us for true, authentic advocacy.
This week we look at how the process of deconstruction and renovation isn’t just about our faith! Pastor Nicole gives the example of deconstructing the face-value of The Barbie Movie, and finding the deeper message. It’s not just about our beliefs, but the framework we operate within. Not just in our religious practices or preferences, but in EVERY aspect of our lives. Thus, understanding the history of what we believe, why we believe it, and rebuilding our foundation on love, justice, and mercy demonstrated by Jesus. This process can be uncomfortable, and it means confronting some difficult truths about ourselves and the world around us.
This sermon is about how we can learn to be advocates through the life and actions of Jesus. Jesus was an advocate. His ministry was about bringing in the misfit and making space for the marginalized. Not coddling the insider, and making them feel good about their surface level worship and religious rituals. The clip we watched this week shows Barbie reflecting on her past, and soul-searching for ways to improve her present. Her eyes are open and she begins to see the world in a different way. This is the start to becoming an advocate! We must learn to reevaluate so that we can learn to see things from other’s lived experience. Jesus not only challenged the societal norms of his day, but he also advocated for change. So, like Barbie we need to reflect on the past to find an understanding history and the ongoing impacts history has. Through the lens of Barbie, and the life of Jesus we discuss why it is necessary to advocate for those who are marginalized. To be a voice to those who often go ignored.
